Interview: Teams to look out for

KIDA TALKS Interview:

Teams to look out for

In Fall KNC, we had a number of teams with a freshmen member and a speaker-award-winning-debater break to the main break. Namely, ADS 1(Eui Joon Kim and Min Young Rho(freshmen)) broke and Eui Joon Kim was 4th Best Speaker, while KDS 2(Dongyeop Lee and Keum Joo Min(freshmen)) broke as the last seed (16th seed) and both received speaker awards (Dongyeop 7th Best Speaker, Keum Joo 2nd Best Rookie speaker). Look out for the new power teams, they are coming for you!

KDS 2

(Dongyeop Lee and Keum Joo Min(Freshmen))

Q: Would you briefly introduce yourself?

Dongyeop: My name is Dongyeop, also Patrick, I was quarter finalist, 16th breaking team and 7th best speaker in this year’s KNC. I have been spending seven years of my life’s vacation for debate, MUN and things related to these activities and despite the fact that I tried to get away from it for a moment by going to exchange program to China, I ended up doing debate in China as well. I’m planning another escape next year and I’ll be probably end up doing debate in some other part of the world:)

Keum Joo: My name is Keum Joo Min. I am from KDS currently attending Kyung Hee University. I major international studies and I am a first grader. At KNC I got to the quarterfinals and was qualified for the 2nd Best Rookie Speaker. I was very honored to break when I was a rookie. I was impressed because it was my first time to debate in such a intense and formal competition. Also I only learned about BP about a few months ago (3~4months) I think I should get credit on those two facts. I also am a person who likes to have fun and socialize with people. I personally find debaters very funny and I would really love to have opportunities to socialize with people. I hope KIDA gives us more opportunities to socialize.

Q: How did you construct your team and your role?

Dongyeop: When we were doing the opening Keum Joo was the first speaker and Dong yeoup was the second speaker. In the closing it goes the opposite, luckily we didn’t have problem regarding overlapping roles, but I didn’t know that she was rookie until a week before the tournament.

Q: What do you think is the strength and weakness of your team?

Keum Joo: Dongyeop is the engine of our team. He is the one who gives out ideas to his partner. But I want to point out that this is not the only strength. He knows how to work together and supports his partner. He encourages when his partner is in panic and loses hope. He is basically the inspiration of Keum Joo’s tough debate life.

Q: What is your further goal as a debater from now on?

Semi Finalist in NEAO!

Q: Is there any special system or training that we can share together?

Dongyeop: I just push her to do things and torture her to a point Keum Joo swear at me. I guess it works fine with little side effect.

Q: What were the best and the worst moments at KNC? Tell us your stories!

Dongyeop: The best moment was when we got into the main break as the 16th team, as we thought we didn’t make break. After all those bluff that I made to Keum Joo. And the worst moment was when we got 4th during the motion that I was too confident to an extend where I just felt so happy during the debate. It was unexpected and embarrassing

Q: During KNC, What was your team’s unforgettable funny episode?

Some people were playing AnyPang during the debate and they still managed to node at good points.

Q: Debate with which team was unforgettable to you?

Dongyeop: KDS1 (JyaHyun Lee and Il Hwan Hwang)

Q: Who did you think was the most inspiring speaker at KNC?

Dongyeop: Donghee Chae, KU, was most inspiring to me during this KNC, I debated against her last year and she indeed improved a lot.

Q: Who was the hottest CAP?

I think the CAP Jae Yong Shin was the HOTTEST XD. He is really gentle and nice. I have never seen such a soft t and gentle person like that. If god really existed I am pretty sure god looks like him. He has this very warm subtle smile that makes other people comfortable. Sometimes debates are hard to be really gentle, calm and nice. Also I think he is a great listener and I bet he will give super good advice.

Q: Who was the most inspiring adjudicator?

Joe Iesue

Q: Any word for Korea Debaters?

You never know the result until you hear it.

ADS 1

(Eui Joon Kim and Min Young Rho(freshmen))

Q: Would you briefly introduce yourself?

Eui Joon Kim, Sogang University, Psychology Major, Junior, Quarter Finalist / 4th Best Speaker

Min Young Rho, Sogang University, Business Major, Freshmen, Quarter Finalist

Q: How did you construct your team and your role?

We decided to team up sometime around May 2012 after Spring KNC, when we found out both of us had decided to fully commit for the-coming BP tournaments. So we went to Summer ADI and Intramuros IV to practice our teamwork. Throughout the tournament experience, we modified our roles and practiced with it in internal sessions and KIDA league debates.

Q: What do you think is the strength and weakness of your team?

I think the strength of our team is that we have the bondage (not in a ewwww way) as a partner and friend that we can personally relate to, thus having similar perspectives. So during prep time we don’t have that much of conflicts or disagreements, but rather try to make the best out of it. Weakness could be that… Hmmm maybe we become extremely vulnerable in front of hot female debaters?

Q: What is your further goal as a debater from now on?

Our goal is to win the up-coming 2012 NEAO! (yes seriously) We will be teaming up for at least three more semesters, and our endgame would be participating 2014 Worlds in India.

Q: Is there any special system or training that we can share together?

We give each other homework before tournaments in terms of making a matter file (which we call it ‘nerd note’). For this KNC, Euijoon prepared a full, lengthy matter file on Syrian issues, while I prepared Eurozone related issues; (and none of them came up as a motion.) and teach each other about the important issues.

Q: What was the best and the worst motion at KNC? Tell us your stories!

The best motion for me was the one on Olympics (Round 1). It was the only time I had so many examples and confidence regarding the issue. Worst must be Round 6, with the sexual assault motion. We were at 11pts with high speaker points, so we were allocated to a room where members being KU1 (Seth, Joonbin), KU2 (Noelle, Donghee), EDIS1 (Haina, YoungCho). Basically we were allocated to the room where the grand champion + 2 grand finalists were there. The worst, we were Opening Government on an issue that we weren’t sure at all.

Q: During KNC, What was your team’s unforgettable funny episode?

Quite famous one; on the motion about providing a minimum quota on manufacture industries; my teammate was trying to say that machines are efficiently replacing human manual labor, thus we don’t need a quota. To quote his exact words: “Mister Speaker, we think that machines are efficiently and effectively replacing these handjob specialists”. Funniest thing is, Euijoon didn’t know why people were laughing until his speech ended.

Q: Who did you find the hottest at Fall KNC?

The girls who danced Samba during the opening ceremony!! That was awesome.

Q: Debate with which team was unforgettable to you?

EuiJoon: The last round against KU2, EDIS 1, KU 1 was the most scary, don’t-know-what-to-say, but educational round. As the OG, I had a good chance to face strong debaters with a motion I wasn’t confident. It was unforgettable when the CO whip comes up and gives an argument why OG got forth. HaHa

Minyoung: Personally, debating against KU2 was the most unforgettable. I was DPM and my sister, Noelle as LO and Donghee as DLO. Basically I was sandwiched by two of the most terrifying debaters.

Q: Who did you think was the most inspiring speaker at KNC?

KNC Finals, Seth Kang was the most inspiring speaker. His speech had the greatest impact on me during the whole tournament.

Q: Who was the hottest CAP?

Hmmmm…Wasn’t there only one female CAP?

Q: Who was the most inspiring adjudicator?

Joshua Park. He judged us twice, and he gave me very good feedback that helped me improve throughout the tournament.

Q: How did you start debating? What is your goal as a debater from now on?

Because our brother/sister forced us to do it! Inception happens in real life you know? Haha. Our goal is to be good at debate and love debate!!!

Q: Any word for Korea Debaters?

EuiJoon: I hope our team can show you guys that we can advance even further! Next step is the Semis and Finals! We will promise you that our team will win a tournament in a near future.

Minyoung: I’m a freshman this year, so my gratitude towards the pioneers of Korean debate society: Thank you for your dedication and affection towards this mind-blowing activity, and, us newbies will continue your legacy!
